This committee helps guide implementation of the County's Greenways and Trails Master Plan
The Hillsborough County Greenways and Trails Committee (established 1995) considers issues relating to the implementation of the Hillsborough County Greenways and Trails Master Plan (1995, updated 2024) and is responsible for making recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners regarding those issues. Committee activities include:
• advocating protection of environmentally important lands that contribute to the greenway system,
• advocating adequate funding for land acquisition and management and for trails construction and operation,
• participating in public education and outreach activities,
• updating the Greenway and Trails map,
• guiding development of new trail concepts, and
• prioritizing trail projects for funding.
County staff, as designated by the County Administrator, provide technical and administrative support to the Committee.
Membership
The Hillsborough County Greenways and Trails Committee is comprised of 19 voting seats: twelve seats are reserved for citizen members; four seats are reserved for local government representatives; and up to three seats are reserved for utilities. Interested government agencies are invited to appoint liaisons to attend and participate in Committee meetings, but these do not have voting roles.
The citizen members represent various greenway and trail user interests and are appointed by the Committee as a whole. The allocation of seats for user interests include: one seat each representing paddling, hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian users; two seats representing users of paved multi-use trails; two seats representing the preservation and management of natural resources; and four at-large seats.
Terms
There are no set terms for Committee members. The Committee votes annually to select a Chair, Vice Chair, and Recording Secretary from among the membership.
