Event will feature three-time Pulitzer Prize nominee whose book was longlisted for a National Book Award

Hillsborough County, Fla. (Aug. 1, 2025) - The school year is about to begin, but summer reading is never over, making it a great opportunity to meet a New York Times best-selling author and children's book writer.

Nationally recognized writer Sherri Winston will discuss her book, "President of the Whole Fifth Grade," starting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, at the Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library, 2902 W. Bearss Ave., Tampa, FL, 33618.

The first 50 children in attendance will receive a free book by the author. No reservations or tickets are needed to attend the free event.

Winston is an author for children in grades three through seven, but the event is recommended for all ages. She has written several books including "Shark Teeth," winner of the Walter Dean Myers Award, and "Lotus Bloom and the Afro Revolution," which was longlisted for the National Book Award. Winston was a longtime newspaper writer and columnist in South Florida at the Sun-Sentinel newspaper. She is a three-time nominee for a Pulitzer Prize for her lifestyle column in South Florida.

"President of the Whole Fifth Grade" is the story of Brianna Justice when her ambitions come to life in an exciting and fast-paced tale. Brianna may only be an elementary student in Michigan, but she has big dreams to follow in her chef hero's footsteps. To do so, Brianna must first become president of her class. When a new student, Jasmine Moon, also runs for president, Brianna must kick up the competition to win the election. Winston uses humor and heart to tell the story of elementary school politics and the challenges of navigating a fair election.
