Hands-on classes help seniors build confidence using smartphones, email, and the internet
A new program in Hillsborough County is giving seniors a hands-on opportunity to navigate the ever-changing world of technology. Hillsborough County Aging Services is offering Digital Literacy Workshops open to all seniors age 50 and over in Hillsborough County, now through June 5. The program is designed to help seniors gain skills, understanding, and comfort with technology, including smartphones and laptops.
Aileen Kordas, one of the many participants, says the program offers her a chance to feel comfortable with technology.
"Everything is digital today, nothing is old-fashioned," said Kordas. "I'm learning how to text, and it's awesome because I can connect with my family and friends."
Each class covers one topic per week and is presented in person by an instructor. Event organizers say not only will participants learn more about technology but also how to safely navigate the digital world. Each workshop also offers a separate one-on-one session for interested seniors. Aging Services says the program is all about meeting the needs of seniors in the community.
"People our age, we have to keep up with the times," said Kordas. "It's a learning experience, and I'm glad the County has events like this to teach us."
