Mobile solar-powered charging stations provide those without electricity a chance to recharge devices

When severe storms cause power outages, it can be a challenge to charge devices. To help the community power up, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue's Office of Emergency Management (HCFR-OEM) can provide solar-powered charging stations to communities in need.

Powered by the sun

HCFR-OEM acquired several charging stations in 2024 for use during power outage emergencies. The stations, which come in two sizes, are trailers that can be easily hauled to locations without electricity.

The portability of the stations allows for emergency services to transport the trailers to areas where they are needed most. For instance, after Hurricane Milton in 2024, the trailers were used at comfort stations and shelters.

All stations are solar-powered and allow people to charge personal devices such as cellphones, laptops, wheelchairs, two-way radios, portable battery packs, and other appliances that use rechargeable batteries.

Providing the opportunity to charge cellphones after a storm or other incidents that result in power outages is key to helping people stay connected with their family, doctors, pharmacies, insurance companies, and beyond.

Charging station features

The largest charging station offers more than a chance to power up. The trailer also provides WiFi, bluetooth connectivity, and two TV screens that can be used to broadcast news, weather forecasts, and helpful County information.

Twenty lockers built into the charging station allow people to conveniently secure their devices while they are charging them.

The charging station is also furnished with two high-top charging tables. The tables have about eight outlets each and allow more users to power their devices at the same time.

In addition to these features, the large charging station trailer has three solar-powered batteries, enabling it to provide power for up to 5 days without sun exposure.

When the electricity goes out and batteries run low, the charging stations provide a practical, sustainable solution to keep the community powered up and connected.
