What We Do

There are four sections of GIS, including Asset Inventory, Streets & Addresses, Enterprise GIS, and Applied GIS Section. Read more about the department and long term goals.

• Asset Inventory  - The Asset Inventory Section collects information related to features in the County’s ROW including signs, crosswalks, handrails, sidewalks, traffic signals and stormwater assets. This data collection is done either by in-office digitizing from as-builts or record drawings, or by field collection using GPS-enabled tablets.

• Streets and Addresses (911 Agency) -  Assigns addresses for unincorporated areas of Hillsborough County and coordinates with the municipalities to create a seamless addressing system. Approves street names countywide. Works with Development Services to provide addresses for individuals and businesses applying for permits. Provides addressing data to emergency responder agencies.  

• Enterprise GIS - Maintains and administers the centralized GIS infrastructure (servers, databases, and web applications), and makes GIS technologies and support available to BOCC staff and partner agencies. The team also manages several critical system integrations, including integrating critical address and streets data for the routing of Fire Rescue emergency dispatch calls.

• Applied GIS - Provides mapping and GIS data management solutions, GIS dataset/database design, data analysis and field data collection solutions. The team also updates and maintains most of the GIS datasets distributed to BOCC staff and other agencies and provides support to other departments in modernizing traditionally paper workflows.

Long-term strategic goals

• Implement process improvements and efficiencies through GIS solutions that enable cost savings for taxpayers.
• Promote community prosperity and community engagement by putting more data, maps and information into the hands of citizens.
• Demonstrate the value of GIS to County Departments and partner agencies (by providing GIS products that help provide better information and a better customer experience for citizens/increase ability of county agencies to meet their business needs).
• Support emergency planning, response, and recovery.
• Maintain and distribute high quality, authoritative GIS data (by maintaining database infrastructure according to best practices and accurate, current datasets and metadata.)
