It’s never too early to make sure you and your family stay safe during storms

Storm season be the last thing on your mind during sunny skies, but it’s the perfect time to start preparing. Make sure to have emergency plans in place so you’ll be ready for the weather.

Hurricane season is from June 1 to Nov 30

In the months leading up to summer, check these important preparedness plans off your to-do list:

Pack a disaster supply kit - If you plan on riding out the storm at home, be sure to have enough supplies for seven days in case you lose power, or emergency crews are unable to get to you. This includes non-perishable food, water, hygiene items, battery powered flashlight and radio, cash, and important documents.

Make an evacuation plan - When your evacuation zone is called or you plan to leave your home before the storm, know where you’ll go. Emergency leaders recommend evacuating tens of miles, not hundreds. This will help ease traffic during evacuations. Make plans to stay with family, friends, hotel, or at a hurricane shelter. Hillsborough County shelters are not a resort, but a last resort if you have no other options, and space for residents and their valuables is limited.

If you plan to stay put, identify a small, interior, windowless room in a sturdy building on the lowest level that is not subject to flooding for best protection.

Have a plan for pets – Pets are part of the family too. Do not leave them alone when evacuating. Have food supplies packed for animals when evacuating to a pet-friendly hotel or shelter. Find Hillsborough County pet shelter information.

If you or a loved one has special needs, Hillsborough County has programs to help residents prepare and find safe shelter and transportation during an evacuation.
