How to use sandbags
- Place a plastic tarp/waterproof barrier in front of the flood-prone door
- Tape the tarp to the doorframe
- Arrange the first row of sandbags horizontally across the entire doorway
- Flatten the sandbags as you put them in place
- Stack the next row of sandbags on top of the first in a staggered pattern as necessary
How to store sandbags
- Stack in a high, dry place to keep them for future storms. Properly stored sandbags should last a year or more.
What to do with your sandbags after a storm
- Sandbags that encountered flood waters
- Spread sand in yard to fill holes and low-lying areas, or use in gardens
- Trash the bag, do NOT recycle the bag
- Do NOT dump sand in trash cart
- Or, bring to a Community Collection Center for disposal (HCFL.gov/CCC)
- Sandbags that did not encounter flood waters
- Reuse sandbags for next storm season
- Store properly
