Peace of mind is just a quick vet visit away

Our pets are more than companions – they're part of the family. Keeping them healthy and safe means staying up to date on essential care, including protection from rabies. In Florida, rabies is considered an endemic disease, which means it consistently circulates in the environment – particularly among wildlife such as raccoons and bats.

While rare, rabies is fatal once symptoms appear, making prevention through vaccination critical. Thankfully, it’s also simple and effective.

Why rabies vaccination matters

  • It’s the law. Florida requires all dogs, cats, and ferrets over 4 months old to be vaccinated against rabies
  • It protects your pet from infected wildlife
  • It protects people, since vaccinated pets help reduce the risk of transmission

Where to go

Most veterinary clinics offer rabies vaccinations as part of routine care, so contact your veterinarian to make sure your pet is up to date. If you are not established with a vet, there are resources available to help you find one, such as the Hillsborough County Veterinary Medical Society and the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.

In Hillsborough County, a current rabies vaccination is required to obtain a pet registration tag, which serves as visible proof that your pet is vaccinated and registered.

Tips for pet owners

  • Avoid feeding pets – or stray animals – outside at night, as this can attract raccoons and other animals
  • Keep pets indoors or supervise them when outdoors
  • Never approach or handle wild animals, even if they seem calm or friendly

Rabies prevention starts with you. By keeping your pet vaccinated, you’re not only complying with the law – you're taking a simple yet powerful step to protect your pet, your family, and your community. It’s a small act of care that brings peace of mind and helps keep Hillsborough County a safe place for people and pets alike.
